Episode 04: Professor Jayachandran - The ionosphere entrepreneur
A look at the path and mindsets that lead to an entirely novel way to be a physicist - at the crossroads between science and entrepreneurship.
Why did I venture up to New Brunswick, Canada in the dead of winter?
Well, at the kind and warm invitation of Professor Jayachandran - an esteemed pioneer of Space Physics and builder of an empire of space science capability, network, and knowledge - to learn about his life and the pivotal moments that made him an innovator in the field of space science and to tease out how he made it happen.
Jay, as those close to him know him, is a hero of mine because of his unique demeanor - one of candor, humor, cutting wit and a steadfast refusal to do anything but speak his mind - but also because he is a true pioneer in the field of space science. He has led the creation of:
A premier research group here at the University of New Brunswick; and
One of the most capable instrumentation networks for studying the weather in space - known as the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (see http://chain.physics.unb.ca/chain/)
and consistently pushes the boundaries of our understanding of the space environment.
It is my distinct pleasure to sit down with Jay today to talk about his trajectory, both in life and career, and the mindsets that have accompanied him along the way, and to talk about the secrets and tools of his success.
